Leopard print is arguably one of the most controversial fashion trends ever seen. Over the years its popularity has fluctuated, originally being a symbol of wealth and power to getting dismissed as trashy and cheap. Whether you love it or hate it, its ability to resurface in the fashion scene cannot be denied.
When leopard print first entered the fashion world, it was a symbol of wealth and power. The print was costly and therefore only seen on kings and queens, believed at the time to protect them from enemies. Leopards are typically a symbol of fierceness and defiance and thus the style was not accepted until much later.
In 1947 Christian Dior put the print on the catwalk for the very first time. The collection was called the ‘New Look’ and dared to showcase looks that had never been seen before, featuring a leopard print silk-chiffon evening gown and day dress. This was a controversial statement that was praised by the masses and later saw a surge in popularity for the design. It wasn’t long before other designers began to use leopard print on every item of clothing from trousers to shoes and bags.
Since then, leopard print has continuously cycled in and out of the fashion scene, becoming a timeless fashion piece which has transcended decades. Now, in the year 2024, this iconic pattern is once again reclaiming its spotlight in the fashion world, emerging as a bold and fearless statement piece.
Leopard print has come a long way from where it began, and it is clear that the trend is far from over. The timeless pattern has exceeded all expectations and whether you consider it a classy look, or a daring statement piece, leopard print knows no limits.
